About Karen Johnson
Karen joined CivicActions as a Systems Administrator in 2016, working with the IT team to install, maintain, and upgrade server architecture. A perpetual problem-solver, she supports both clients and fellow team members by ensuring that all systems are healthy, all the time — freeing developers to intensity their creative focus on client projects. Karen also brings increased value and stability to the IT side of projects by working on system upgrades, security, and automation.
Prior to joining CivicActions, Karen worked as a systems and database administrator for Sensaphone, where she was responsible for the health and oversight of geographically separate server clusters. Thriving in environments of rapidly shifting challenges, Karen excelled in the maintenance of several large-scale MySQL and NoSQL databases.
While studying Art History at Bard College from 2007 to 2011, Karen fell into fascination with technology systems, especially Linux. She completed her degree, but took night classes to pursue her dream of working in tech. Several years of hands-on experience and a spirit of continuous learning have propelled her to expertise in her industry of choice.
Karen volunteers remotely for the Organization For Transformative Works, overseeing systems and teams in support of the “copyleft” movement. She lives just outside Philadelphia in Media, PA with her greyhound Leif and many piles of books. When not tinkering with computers, she enjoys reading science fiction, knitting, and dancing tango.
