CiviCon Recap: Thoughts on CiviCRM Conference 1 Week Later, Plus Videos

It's a week and a day since the first ever CiviCon concluded. I've had a chance to encode and post all the videos from the Ingite and Lighting Talks (see below), and wanted to share just a few thoughts.  There were over 70 people at CiviCon, nearly double the number at the first DrupalCon (5 years ago). Both firsts took place 5 years after the project launched.  There were some jokes as we left the Michell Kapor Center about how big CiviCon will be in 5 years.

The opportunity to meet with so many great people working with CiviCRM was fantastic, and for me, it was the first time I had met folks from the Core team other than Dave Greenberg and Donald Lobo. I look forward to future CiviCon and meeting more people working with the software.  To that end I am going to convene a Seattle Area CiviCRM User Group (SEACUG), the first meeting of which will be announced shortly (it will be at the end of May).

Ignite Video and Slide Decks From 10NTC

Ian Rhett, Jenn Sramek and I gave our Ignite presentation on Thursday night at the 2010 Nonprofit Technology Conference (10NTC) hosted by NTEN in Atlanta, GA. We've gotten some great feedback directly and via Twitter already!

The audience was fantastic, and the other presenters were really great.  Sarah Davies, the hostess and organizer did a fantastic job both organizing the event and introducing us all with a little song.

Find Your Purpose and Change The World In 5 Minutes

One of the things that makes my job at CivicActions so incredibly awesome is how aligned it is with my intention to make a positive difference in the world.  In San Francisco, I'm part of a group of over a hundred men who are deeply engaged in the process of discovering and living our purpose.

Sharing Your Ideas With Screen Capture and Recording Tools

If you are a developer, blogger or a client who manages or participated on a technical project, screenshot-taking tools are a very useful way conveying your thoughts and ideas to others on your team. Screenshots save you from lengthy explanation emails and keep your team on same page while discussing an idea. This blog post is about different screen capturing tools available out there and which to use and why.

1. Skitch(mac only):

Skitch is more than just an image capturing tool. It is very quick, simple and efficient. You can edit your images - crop them, draw figures on them, write notes on them and share directly via uploading to skitch, flickr, ftp with many other options. This all is mere drag and drop with nothing complex to learn. Download Skitch. Images in this blog are captured using skitch only.

Shortcut keys with skitch:

  • Command-Shift-5 – Crosshairs Snap
  • Command-Shift-6 – Fullscreen Snap
  • Command-Shift-7 – Frame Snap

There is also a great short video on the Skitch website that gives you a quick overview of how it works and what it can do.

Media Mover State of the Code

Media Mover is closing in on its two and a half year birthday. Not a huge milestone, but it bares some reporting back on where things have been and where things are going.

DrupalCon DC 2009: Quality Assurance and the Drupal Development Process

At DrupalCon DC 2009 I co-presented a talk on Quality Assurance and the Drupal Development Process with fellow CivicActions' team member Nathaniel Catchpole. Here is our slide deck from the presentation, and a link to the Presentation video. We covered some of the ways that techniques such as User Stories, Acceptance Tests and SimpleTests can be used pro-actively, before trouble is discovered.

Call For Action: MIT Offering Mobile Activism Course

It's becoming a ubiquitous way for us to connect one-to-one, and increasingly a means of accessing the interwebs. Streaming video is penetrating and eventually two-way videoconferencing will be available. Pocket Sized Projectors portend incredible opportunities for sharing information.
