An Open Nonprofit Directive

Open

At the end of 2009 when the Obama Administration came out with the Open Government Directive (which I wrote about at the time) I had some conversations with other consultants and thinkers in the nonprofit technology world about the idea of an "Open Nonprofit Directive" that would, in many ways, mirror the OGD.

Two years have passed, and in the prognostications for the year ahead I've seen a number of references to "opening up" and increasing transparency in the nonprofit sector. Once again I am left thinking it is time for an Open Nonprofit Directive.

Firefox, Mac and Transparency woes - pulling the FOSS strands together

It is often said that 3 things make a 'trend' in the modern world, so here are 3 very sneaky browser bugs triggered by 3 different Drupal modules that have crossed my path in the last few weeks, all (it turns out) quite likely related. Here they are, in the hope that if you see something similar you might be able to locate the problem a little more rapidly.

Long Live Radical Transparency

In the new issue of Wired (15.04), Clive Thompson exposes the crazy world of "radical transparency". "Not long ago, the only public statements a company ever made were professionally written press releases and the rare, stage-managed speech by the CEO. Now firms spill information in torrents, posting internal memos and strategy goals, letting everyone from the top dog to shop-floor workers blog publicly about what their firm is doing right - and wrong." From day one, CivicActions has done our best to be as open as possible. Sharing process documents, proposals, potential RFPs with "competitors", and of course, blogging as time permits. It's exciting to see the meme which has been thriving in "start-up culture" begin to reach into established "corporate" culture in such a short period!
