Social Media Marketing Budgets Rising At Businesses, What About Non Profits?

Last week Mashable ran a blog post about the increasing budgets for social media marketing at big businesses. It was based on a report by the Aberdeen Groups covered in more detail on EMarketer.com. The report had two important findings:
  1. 63% of best in class businesses surveyed said they would be increasing their social media marketing budgets, 21% said by 25% or more.

A recent study on social networking came to my attention yesterday and it sparked a discussing with Bevan that we vowed to continue on the blog. The study which surveyed 13,000 adults between 18 and 65 in 17 developed nations found that 58% did not know what social networking is (30% in the US).

Social Networks, in all their forms, are a central organizing paradigm. Our values, education, health, diet, vacation destination, favorite drugs and sex partners are generated and propagated through Social Networks. These networks may not determine our choices, but they certainly influence them; they are inextricably bound to how we make our choices. If the Social Networks we inhabit don't provide or accept our choices, more often then not we'll go and find new ones.
