Blog Action Day: What Isn't Measured Can't Be Managed

It is ironic that I write this while traveling from Seattle to New York by airplane.  Three years ago I set out to measure my carbon footprint from air travel.  Back in 2007 I clocked nearly 70,000 miles and a carbon footprint on the order of 25 tons of CO2. In 2008 the number dropped to 56,000 miles and about 22 tons of CO2. This year, I've only flown about 29,000 miles for around 10 tons of CO2.

Catalyst has done an excellent job and the campaign was featured in NZ's national Sunday newspaper a couple of weeks ago.

They've got many Kiwi celebrities on for the campaign, some which are known internationally too; Most notably Lucy Lawless (Xena Warrior Princess) and Keisha Castle Hughes (From Whale Rider and award-winning other films).

My Carbon Footprint For 2008

P1020673Back in January I posted a blog about my carbon footprint for 2007. With 36 flights spanning nearly 70,000 miles, I had calculate my carbon footprint at a little bit more than 14 tons of CO2, turns out I had some bad numbers in there and overestimated it by maybe 2 or 3 tons.

CivicActions Launches SolveClimate.com

Last week, CivicActions launched a new website, SolveClimate.com. The site tracks solutions to climate change. Not little stuff like changing light bulbs, but the big solutions that will have immediate and measurable impact on the pollution causing climate change: green building codes, carbon caps, increased fuel economy. The premise of the project is that American's are really all in this together.

Seeing the forrest for the Albido?

It used to be so easy, just a few months ago it seemed that planting trees would be enough to offset my carbon footprint and, at the same time, help prevent soil errosion and other enviornmental problems in degraded environments.
