Kevin Walsh
Kevin Walsh is an experienced technologist for progressive NGOs, helping organizations architect flexible, simple, and dependable digital platforms. He has brought his passion for the common good and seventeen years of hands-on experience to dozens of CivicActions clients since he joined our firm in 2008.
Kevin is unique in his understanding of the business needs of NGOs, as well as his technical experience building CRM and CMS solutions for some of our largest clients.
In April 2012, Kevin led the technical launch of a Drupal-based web application for Unilever’s Sustainable Living Lab. This 24 hour ‘dialogue on sustainability’ housed 40 discussions between 2,500 thought leaders from over 90 countries. The centerpiece of the application was a customized Disqus discussion system designed for the event’s unique format, as well as performance and scalability. Kevin researched, developed, and delivered this application in five weeks from kickoff.
In 2011, Kevin led the development of nopetstorepuppies.com for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Location tools enable pet owners to identify which stores in their area sell puppies, and encourage them to pledge to stop shopping at pet stores that do sell dogs (which typically come from puppy mills). The site will soon hit the milestone of 100,000 pledges.
Kevin led CivicActions’ redevelopment of bbrfoundation.org for the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation. The Discovery phase included research and analysis of five CRM tools used by different departments within BBRF. CivicActions then helped BBRF phase out two of the more costly systems (replacing them with the free and open source CiviCRM).
Also in 2011, Kevin led the launch of lambentfoundation.org, which included a web application used by by prospective Lambent grantees. The grantee application system was designed to integrate with their pre-existing grantee management tool.
In 2010, when Tesla Motors decided to adopt Drupal for its global web presence, Kevin analyzed the technical and business goals of the site and provided strategic recommendations and architectural solutions to achieve those goals. Working with a team of CivicActions engineers and engineers inside Tesla Motors, he has since helped Tesla internationalize their web presence. Teslamotors.com is now available in more than a dozen languages, with content specific to twenty countries.
Kevin has presented at conferences in Canada and the US, on topics ranging from Agile development, web-based location tools, and Drupal site building. Kevin lives in Toronto Canada.
