Code Malcolm’s Quick Guide to Google I/O: Day Two

First thing is a bit of a housekeeping point: when running through the giveaways yesterday, I forgot to mention that attendees also got a Verizon Mobile Hotspot, with 3 months of free connectivity. Pretty sweet little unit!

Keynote

Though not terribly well rested, I did make it to the packed keynote on Wed., May 12. This multi-speaker presentation covered the three flavours of Chrome:

Code Malcolm’s Quick Guide to Google I/O: Day One

A popular t-shirt expressing a popular sentiment

Overview

Google I/O is always a fun conference to attend. Of course, there’s always the awesome giveaways for attendees. This year, the big gift was a Galaxy 10.1 tablet, customized with a distinctive Android pattern on the back. There was also, if you went to the right sessions, an Android Open Accessory Development Kit (ADK), to use your Android phone as an Arduino controller, and a Sony Xperia play phone. Rumor has it that tomorrow, they will be handing out another phone. [UPDATE: no phone, but a Chromebook, Jun. 15th!] (Last year’s early bird attendees got both an Evo and a Nexus phone, while regular attendees got just the Nexus.)

Then of course, there’s always the announcements of hot new software and hardware Google’s been working on. I went to the sessions on Android Based Businesses, Google Chrome Frame and Google Web Fonts. (It was a slow day because I slept in – hey, we arrived late and our hotel, The Petite Auberge, as wonderfully quaint and charming as it is, was plagued by the sounds of  trucks unloading at about 5 or 6 am.)

Great Time at BADCamp!

After I found the right building amidst the chaos of a Big Game at UC Berkeley, BADCamp was a lot of fun. I spent the day on Saturday and attended a session by Hally Turner at Digital Rhino for those looking to break into the space. She gave a lot of good tips on the qualities that seem to define success in this community and specifically for web development shops.

GreenNet Conference Recap: Low Carbon Meets High Tech

While the country remains in a fury over absurd corporate bonuses and looking for economy scapegoats, it was a refreshing change to be at the Green:Net conference yesterday, surrounded by distinguished entrepreneurs, technologists and investors committed to solving the world’s biggest issue: climate change. In the spirit of "we’re running out of time," San Francisco’s Mayor Gavin Newsom kicked off the one-day event after a long-delay, setting in motion the urgent pace and tone among the 200 participants. Newsom did a great job of rallying the troops, inspiring action and sharing some recent successes both in his City and within California.

Sharpen Your Theming Skills At DrupalCon

Theming is one of the aspects of Drupal development that Drupalers most want to get better at, according to Dries' last survey.

Drupal 7 - The New Database Layer

Have I ever told you how much I love data? After listening to Larry Garfield's talk Drupal Databases: The Next Generation, I now love data more than ever! The database layer for Drupal 7 has been completely rewritten to take advantage of PHP's PDO extenion. Not only does it allow Drupal to work with many different database types it also simplifies how developers interact with the database.

Getting Ready for Szeged: Creativity and Programming

Drupalcon Szeged is one week away. I am glad I am attending, and I am planning on leading a Birds of a Feather (BOF) during the conference. The focus of the BOF is creativity and programming. I want to discuss the weird mix of human behavior and code. Sounds strange I know, so let me describe in more detail.

Video of Scalable Theming Session from Drupalcon Boston

Drupalcon Boston sessions were all recorded on video and have been made available on archive.org, thanks to numerous drupal community members and other Drupal resources. (This is quite out of date now, but better late than never.) Here are the videos from my talk on Scalable Theming: Theming for 100s of node types, CCK fields, and views:
