The WITNESS Video Hub is a participatory website where anyone, anywhere can upload human rights related media that can be used to create change. Using technologies such as cell phones and other mobile devices, web-based video upload and content distribution, online community building, advocacy and organizational tools, the Video Hub provides new opportunities to feed the populist shift toward user-generated content with media in the service of global human rights advocacy.

Overview of Google authentication methods

There are a number of different authentication methods available for integrating with Google Apps. These include OpenID, OAuth and SAML amongst others. At a first glance, it's not always entirely clear on the differences between them and when you may wish to use one over another. Here's a brief overview which hopefully makes this a bit clearer.

If you know me, you know I am a junkie for three things: interacting with young people, the many aspects of sustainability, and my job. From my work in the

PolicyOptions.org Pilot Site Development

As part of its pilot, the PolicyOption.org initiative used a wiki (see http://policyoptions.pbworks.com) where college students researched issue briefs as a start for their network of local community think tanks.

Policy Options Teaser

PolicyOptions.org Initiative

The Policy Options Inititive seeks to establish a network of local community think tanks that will make policy information, news, and research available on websites, weekly email news updates, and research. These community think tanks will feature local, state, and national policy news and analysis on topics of local interest that draw upon policies and program models from around the country and world.

The goal of the
PolicyOptions.org is to fill an important gap in our public life: the availability of accurate, balanced, comprehensive information and analysis about the issues that we care about and hope to impact through public policy and civic engagement. We believe that this information is critical to informed citizen action in shaping policy and planning program improvements.

They will tap the underutilized research capacity of institutions of higher education to create local and state level community think tanks, which will be housed in participating college or university public policy or community outreach centers or institutes. These locally-focused bureaus will be linked through an affiliate structure to cover state issues and to a central national office that will cover national and international policy and program activity.

Google Chart API Module

I was recently asked to take some civicrm demographic data from various groups and graph the data so that a visual comparison could be made between groups. In the course of looking for some graphing/charting technique that would integrate well with drupal & civicrm I discovered the google chart api module.

Recording url click-throughs in civimail as activity records in civicrm 3.x

Recently, during a civicrm upgrade to 3.x, a client asked for each civiMail click-through to not only be tracked for mailing reports, but to show up as an activity record for the user that clicks through. The main problem with doing this out of the box is that when civimail sends an email, it doesn't send any record (other than the email address) of who is receiving that email.

Hailu Dyami

Working with CivicActions since:
October, 2007
Role:
Engineer
Location:
Northampton, MA
United States
See map: Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps, MapQuest

Hailu Dyami has been steeped in social causes since birth, which may be why this son of politically active parents from the “five sisters” region of western Massachusetts is so drawn to CivicActions.  An engineer and jack-of-all-trades, he hacks Drupal modules and writes custom PHP as seamlessly as he provides quality assurance for the team.  Prior to joining CivicActions, he worked on the Manhattan Neighborhood Network, a subset of Manhattan’s public-access television station where he wrote a Drupal module to display information about the network’s programming.

Active on a number of the firm’s projects, Hailu devotes half his time to quality assurance and wears multiple hats for the balance.  On behalf of Amnesty International, he provided custom coding for the Menu Trails module.  As an application specialist, he laid the groundwork for development projects including Next Agenda and the Witness Project.  An engagement with ProVention saw Hailu as lead engineer on an initiative sponsored by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

With an African-American father and Native American mother, issues of peace and social justice have informed Hailu’s being for as long as he can remember.  He is currently aiding the Prison Birth Project, a non-profit that provides support services to incarcerated mothers in western Massachusetts.  He also lets loose as a member of a Pow Wow drum  and runs free with his two-year-old daughter every chance he gets.
