I agree with everything in this post and I would add that you should seek to add pictures and graphics where possible as it breaks up solid blocks of text. Also make sure that you have headlines and extracts that will quickly give visitors a taste of what your content has to offer. Most visitors don't hang around long on a web page.
We see readability as one of the most important factors which holds visitors engaged with your content. No matter how good the content is, a large block of text just doesn't do it anymore. As outlined in your post, people like to scan over content and only read the parts that appeal to them, therefore bullets, numbered points or subheadings all contribute to an easily scanned page. Having said that, points 1 & 2 (Hey! Numbered points) of this post are essential for publishing quality content.
