SuperVan JS - an Afternoon of HTML5, JavaScript and Techniques for Building Cross-Device Apps

[pic from Christian Hellman's “Reclaiming HTML5” talk at SuperVan JS mini con]

In my last post, HTML5 Canvas with Dave Shea, I mentioned the abundance of tech talent in Vancouver, and how all of us Vancouverites benefit from their presence. Here's a case in point: not two days after Dave's presentation, the VanJS Meetup group presented SuperVan JS: 5 speakers on a Saturday afternoon, on all things JS.

Common Mobile Layouts

Vancouver's HTML5 Meetup Group hosted John Boxall “Common Mobile Layouts” talk on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2011. I'm going to share his wisdom with you, as well as that of Mozilla's Jeff Griffiths, speaking on new and developing Mozilla initiatives, and Steam Clock Software's Nigel Brooke, introducing WebGL.

Code Malcolm’s Quick Guide to Google I/O: Day Two

First thing is a bit of a housekeeping point: when running through the giveaways yesterday, I forgot to mention that attendees also got a Verizon Mobile Hotspot, with 3 months of free connectivity. Pretty sweet little unit!

Keynote

Though not terribly well rested, I did make it to the packed keynote on Wed., May 12. This multi-speaker presentation covered the three flavours of Chrome:

Creating A Low Bandwidth Theme In Drupal

One of our clients has a large world-wide user base, in many locations where Internet access is limited. In addition to developing for mobile browsers, they also wanted a “low bandwidth” version of the site, optimized for older computers and dial-up connections. Using a handy module and some theming tricks, this was very easy to implement in Drupal.

A Soft Story About Code

Ezra  “Funk Coordinator” Barnett Gildesgame’s Drupalcon presentation, Introduction to Module Development, got me thinking about The Great Drupal Dilemma: to Code or Not to Code?

Wait, scratch that. Let me start again.

I’ve been building Drupal sites for over five years. I came from a design background.  I’m also half lazy, half apathetic and half gutless.

Scratch that.

Vancouver, BC’s West Coast DrupalMirrorCon

Chicago Drupalcon was packed with awesome sessions. If you were not able to make it to Chi-town, but wished you could, you may be interested in Vancouver, BC’s DrupalMirrorCon. It’s scheduled, for Sat. Mar. 19, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and Sun. Mar. 20, 12:30 pm to 5:15 pm, at Dharmalab, 1814 Pandora St. (right beside Free Geek). Drupal MirrorCon is essentially a weekend of watching video presentations from Chicago, with other Drupallers.

Drupal Hitting The Enterprise And What That Means For Nonprofit Organizations

If the THREE THOUSAND Drupal geeks at DrupalCon San Francisco in April, including the friggin' WHITE HOUSE wasn't enough to convince you that Drupal has hit "The Enterprise," this bit of news oughta' put a nail in it:

Evolving The Virtual Workplace

(I'm planning on migrating a lot of the content I/we generate for our team newsletter to the blog, so for the CivicActions team, you'll be getting more information about what we're up to on the blog than in our internal newsletter.  For the rest of the world, it'll mean a more transparent view into what we're doing at CivicActions and how we do it.  We were founded on, and value, the principles of openness and we intend to dive even deeper into expressing the values of transparency, collaboration and participation.)
