Review: Drupal 6 Site Blueprints From Packt Publishing

A few weeks ago Packt Publishing sent me Drupal 6 Site Blueprints to review... and then things got kind of busy for me.  Over the holiday I've taken some time to read through it, and unfortunately, i would not feel comfortable recommending this book for reasons I will enumerate below.

Book Review: Drupal 6 Search Engine Optimization

SEO book coverI don't get asked to review books often, so I was delighted when I got asked to review Drupal 6 Search Engine Optimization by Ben Finklea, it being top of my list of Drupal books to buy. Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is all about improving your site's position in search results. It's part science, part art, and involves a lot of small, but simple, improvements to your website.

Drupal Multimedia book review

Front cover of Drupal MultimediaIn Drupal Multimedia Aaron Winborn covers media handling in Drupal and provides information on how to embed and manipulate images, audio and video. Packt Publishing provides a dedicated page which lists the complete table of contents and where you can download all example code used in the book as well as a sample chapter. The first chapter provides an in-depth introduction to Drupal, covering nodes, regions, blocks, themes and modules in general and cck and views specifically. The advanced theming section contains information about custom regions, hooking into template.php and creating template files. Each topic comes with clean example code, plenty of comprehensive screenshots of the different configuration forms and of what the end result looks like and notes with extra clarifications, tips and tricks. The author does a great job in describing the basic Drupal concepts, making this chapter really useful for new Drupal users.

Drupal 6 Themes Book Review

Drupal 6 Themes book coverDrupal 6 Themes by Ric Shreeves on Packt Publishing is a great resource for newbie Drupal themers. Themers who are not from a programming background will find it especially useful since it starts with the basics and builds up to more complex yet powerful techniques such as hook_form_alter().

Drupal 6 Book Review: Building Powerful And Robust Websites With Drupal 6

Front cover of David Mercer's Building Powerful and Robust Websites with Drupal 6 Perhaps I am too critical or my expectations are too high. In any case I was disappointed with Building Powerful and Robust Websites with Drupal 6. It may be somewhat useful for Drupal beginners seeking an introduction, general guidance or even basic help, but it lacks the detail and usefulness beginners are likely to need to get tasks done early on. I would expect most Drupal beginners to require more complete and comprehensive resources than what this book provides.

Drupal 5 Themes Book Arrived

Front cover of Drupal 5 Themes Packt Publishing contacted me a couple of weeks back to ask me to review their new drupal book Drupal 5 Themes by Ric Shreeves in exchange for a copy of it. I was a little surprised, but accepted graciously. Given the number of short reviews of the book that have been published on Planet Drupal and drupal.org recently I'm beginning to wonder how many others received the same offer.
